Relevant Social Justice Coursework:
Introduction to Social Justice
This was my very first course within my social justice major where I was introduced to justice thinkers in the past and the present. I learned through defining social justice for myself and reflecting on the many spaces within my life where social justice issues and learning take place. This class helped me realize the importance of incorporating social justice learning into classrooms.
Sociology of Gender
This course gave me a new understanding of gender as a social structure and the ways people form identities surrounding gender and sexuality. This course pushes back on gender as only a biological construct but rather a social. This class pushed me to think more critically about the gender structures that influence our societies and how as a teacher I will use my platform to create a community where gender is talked about in a non-binary way.
Sociology of Racial and Cultural Minorities
This course works within the understanding that race was socially construct and is in fact an illusion. However, this illusion is powerful and determines the everyday interactions of many people living within this world and the United States.
The Role of Conflict and Social Change
In this course I learned about the personal narratives and histories surrounding the Southern Civil Rights Movement while exploring relationships among conflict, social change, and social justice. This course let me hear and learn about the children and women within this movement whose voices usually aren't heard within the general narrative.
Intergroup Dialogue on Disability
The main objective of this course was to learn about the process of intergroup relations and intergroup dialogue. This class helped me become a better conversationalist, develop dialogue skills, and learn incredibly valuable information about stigmas that surround disabilities.
Relevant Elementary-Education Licensure Coursework:
Theory to Practice
This was an extremely beneficial class where I learned about the importance and complexities that go into lesson planning. This class has helped me understand the ways I need to create lessons that are relevant to all of my students. I now have a deeper understanding on how to differentiate my lesson plans and be aware of the differences that exist within my classroom.
Educational Psychology
This course helped me understand the different theories related to learning, motivation, and intelligence as well as, cognitive, social and emotional development. In this course I explored the influences of social and cultural backgrounds on development and learning.
English Learners in the Mainstream
This course gave me resources and an understanding on how to teach and be aware of the students who are english learners in my classroom. This course also highlights the cultural differences that will be obvious or not in a classroom, and how to handle those differences in a constructive way.
Exceptionality
The purpose of this course was to develop an understanding around exceptionalities and the significant legal aspects, diagnosis, labeling, remediation and enrichment. This course has given me resources on how to work and teach students with different physical, mental, emotional, and learning disabilities.
Diversity and Education
I absolutely loved this course and thought it was extremely useful and important. Throughout this course I learned about the impact of diversity within the classroom: race, culture, ethnicity, class, gender, disability, language, and sexual orientation. In the course we explored prejudice and the methods to enhance school success for all children.
