People Serving People is a homeless shelter in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is known for being the biggest family focused shelter in the state. People Serving People's mission is to help homeless and at-risk children in crisis situations build strong foundations for long-term success. This shelter envisions a community where all children have the support and stability to develop their full capacity to thrive.
I started my internship at People Serving People in February of 2017 and worked through June. I was hired as a Early Childhood Development Program intern and worked under the lead and assistant teachers in the Pre-school Prep classroom. Throughout my time at People Serving People I worked with children from ages 2-5 who were guests at the shelter. I learned about trauma informed education and the importance of fostering social and academic development for children who are in crisis. I also grew to understand the complexities that surround homelessness and the effects that it has on children in school. This experience has not only helped me become a more aware educator but a better informed citizen. I hope to continue to do my part to educate others on the effects of homelessness and the prevalence of it throughout our Nation.
